Job Description/Requirements
The Senior Accountant will ensure that all payments are captured accurately and in a timely
manner in the accounting system. Support the Accounts Manager and AFC to ensure that there
are no errors on the balance sheets, statements of profit and loss, cash flows or retained earnings
of SMS and related company accounts. Detailed responsibilities are listed below
This is a full-time position based in Accra, Ghana. The role may involve travel to upcountry
operations and warehouses as well as to cocoa growing areas of Ghana in order to understand and
gain oversight of this geographically widespread business. The Associate Senior Accountant will report into the Accounts Manager.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and ensure high level of quality and timeliness of SMS data capture
- Supervise and ensure that all payments are made in a timely manner
- Ensure strict adherence to all accounting, financial and internal control processes
- Liaise with other entities to ensure SMS intercompany transactions are captured in a timely and accurate manner and with adequate supporting documents
- Weekly review all intercompany transactions to identify and correct errors in a timely manner
- Liaise with Program Managers and Head of Program Quality to timely (monthly) obtain clients activity level of completion for timely revenue booking.
- Supervise and ensure timely completion of client and grants revenue computations, bookings and allocation of salaries.
- Audits work flow to ensure all accounting transactions are processed accurately and in compliance with industry standards.
- Supervises the review of all expense reports, vendor payments, and ensure timely recording in SAP.
- Preparation of monthly journal entries, accruals, prepayments and amortization schedules and year end accruals.
- Handle personally or supervises general ledger reconciliations.
- Review all data entered into the accounting system and ensure its accuracy before posting.
- Supervise the weekly imprest status report from the Accounting Assistant and help follow up on outstanding imprests.
- Monitor purchase order status weekly and follow up with Operations on invoicing and clearance
- Monthly CATF transactions movement, confirmation and quarterly financial statement preparation.
- Weekly Direct Cost and Overhead entry analysis for reclassification or correction.
- Helps with the preparation of the yearly audit
- Monthly accounts receivables and payable reconciliation (GIR run etc) and share with AFC
- Stays current on changes in regulations and other industry news.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience
- Knowledge of grant management and reporting
- Willing to travel into rural areas to understand our business
- Hands on and adaptable to a multi-cultural environment
- Displays knowledge of math and exceptional accounting skills
- Possesses strong supervisory abilities
- Exhibits strong computer skills and knowledge of relevant technology
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new ways of working
- Demonstrates extensive knowledge of financial software programs, (SAP is an advantage).
- Possesses exceptional organizational skills and is an effective multi-tasker.
- Displays the ability to pay close attention to detail.
- Demonstrates good interpersonal skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Has a working knowledge of good accounting practices and financial accounting standards
