Job Summary
The Internal Auditor will be responsible for conducting audits across the bank’s operations, financial activities, internal controls and compliance processes. This role ensures that the bank’s internal controls, risk management systems, and operational procedures are effective, compliant with regulatory requirements, and aligned with industry’s best practices. The ideal candidate will have a keen attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to maintaining the bank’s integrity and financial health, particularly in a rural banking environment.

Job Description/Requirements
Responsibilities:
Internal Audit Planning and Execution
- Plan and execute risk-based audits of financial, operational, and compliance activities across all departments of the bank.
- Develop annual and ad-hoc audit plans based on the risk assessment of the bank’s operations, ensuring comprehensive coverage of critical areas.
- Conduct audits to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, financial reporting, risk management processes, and regulatory compliance.
- Perform audits related to loan portfolios, transaction processing, asset management, cash and Momo handling, and IT security controls.
- Review banking processes such as customer account management, lending operations, treasury management, and regulatory reporting.
Risk Management and Control Evaluation
- Evaluate the bank’s internal controls to identify weaknesses or areas of potential risk, and make recommendations for improvements.
- Assess the effectiveness of the bank’s risk management framework, including credit risk, operational risk, liquidity risk, and compliance risk.
- Identify areas for cost control or operational improvement, making suggestions to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.
- Ensure that risk management strategies are appropriately designed and implemented to mitigate operational, financial, and compliance risks.
Compliance with Regulatory Standards
- Ensure that the bank adheres to applicable banking regulations, including anti- money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC) requirements, financial crime prevention, and data protection laws.
- Review the bank's policies and procedures to ensure they are in line with national and international regulatory standards (e.g., central bank regulations, IFRS, Basel III).
- Assist in preparing for external regulatory inspections, audits, and examinations by gathering necessary documents and responding to queries.
- Stay informed of updates in financial regulations and adjust internal audit practices to remain compliant with new requirements.
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare comprehensive and clear audit reports that document findings, risk assessments, and recommendations for improvements.
- Provide detailed feedback to senior management regarding audit results, outlining areas of concern and corrective actions required.
- Track and follow up on the implementation of audit recommendations to ensure corrective actions are effectively applied
- Maintain accurate, organized, and detailed audit records and workpapers, ensuring compliance with auditing standards.
Continuous Improvement and Support
- Participate in the development of the bank’s internal control policies and procedures to improve operational efficiencies and reduce risk.
- Assist departments in designing controls to address audit findings and enhance process efficiencies.
- Provide support and guidance to staff and departments on internal controls, risk management, and compliance issues.
- Contribute to the bank’s overall corporate governance by ensuring transparency and accountability in all operations.
Audit Committee and Senior Management Interaction
- Communicate audit results and provide insight into risk management and control issues to the Audit Committee, senior management, and external auditors as needed.
- Assist in preparing materials for regular audit committee meetings, ensuring key risks, audit findings, and compliance issues are properly highlighted.
- Maintain open communication with senior management to discuss audit activities, findings, and emerging risks or concerns.
Supervisory Duties
- Plan and lead internal audits, including scope definition, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Supervise the audit team, providing guidance and technical expertise during audits.
- Review audit work papers and reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to standards.
- Conduct training and mentorship programs to enhance team skills and knowledge.
- Address escalated audit findings and liaise with management to resolve complex issues.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or Chartered Accountant (CA) is highly preferred.
- A Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., MBA, Master’s in Accounting) is an advantage.
Experience:
- At least 3 - 5 years of experience in internal auditing, accounting, or financial management, preferably within the banking or financial services sector.
- Experience working in a rural or community-focused banking environment is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with banking regulations, financial reporting requirements, and risk management practices.
- Proven experience in conducting audits of financial systems, operations, and compliance functions.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of auditing principles, risk management, and financial controls.
- In-depth understanding of financial regulations and banking standards (e.g., Basel III, IFRS, anti-money laundering regulations).
- Proficiency in audit software and financial systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, or similar tools).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex processes and identify areas for improvement.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, detailed audit reports.
- Ability to build relationships with colleagues and management, offering constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy in audit processes and reporting.
