The Opportunity
As the Accounting Director for its newly established Accounting Center of Excellence (CoE) in Accra, Ghana you will lead the Accounting CoE, overseeing a team of finance/accounting professionals who will support global operations and ensure the company's financial and accounting processes are efficient, accurate, and compliant. The Director will be responsible for the overall financial management of the CoE, including supervising a small local team and managing relationships with functional peers in the United States.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of finance professionals across various finance functions including general accounting, accounts payable, billing and accounts receivable, international accounting support, and corporate tax. Provide direction, mentorship, and career development support to the team.
- Supervise and oversee the daily operations of the Finance Center of Excellence, ensuring the timely and accurate completion of financial processes and reporting. This includes the oversight of payroll and office management functions by a direct report.
- Coordinate and collaborate with functional peers in the United States and across international offices to ensure alignment in financial operations and strategies. Maintain strong working relationships to address any financial issues or operational challenges.
- Ensure the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports for global stakeholders, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Work with international accounting teams to ensure compliance with local and international regulations.
- Establish and maintain a robust internal control environment for financial reporting, accounting, and tax compliance. Regularly review and assess internal controls to mitigate risks and ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial data.
- Oversee the execution of internal and external audits, working closely with the audit team to ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and international regulations. Provide support in audit processes and respond to audit inquiries.
- Oversee payroll processes for all employees in the Accra office, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Ensure accurate processing of payroll, timely distribution of wages, and resolution of any payroll issues.
- Collaborate with business systems analysts to enhance and optimize financial systems, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Identify areas for improvement in financial systems and processes. Oversee implementation of solutions.
- Manage and oversee corporate tax functions for Abt Global LLC, ensuring compliance with local and international tax laws. Work with external consultants and legal advisors to ensure tax filings are accurate and timely. Collaborate with Head of Tax in the US Office.
- Drive continuous improvement in financial processes and operations. Evaluate current practices, recommend and implement process changes, and champion best practices for operational efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
- Serve as the key point of contact for financial queries from key internal stakeholders including department heads, senior leadership, and external parties. Provide insightful analysis and financial information to support decision-making processes.
What We Value
- Bachelor’s Degree + Fifteen years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Twelve years of relevant experience, or PhD + Ten years of relevant experience
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in finance, with at least 5 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role. Prior experience in public accounting at a large international accounting firm (e.g., KPMG, PwC) is preferred.
- Strong understanding of international accounting standards and financial regulations.
- Expertise in managing complex financial operations and large, diverse teams.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to think strategically and drive change and process improvements.
- Proficient in financial software and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, etc.).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong focus on accuracy and detail, with a proactive approach to risk management.
