Job Description/Requirements
We are seeking talented and dedicated ceramic artists / sculptors with a strong foundation in ceramic production. Ideal candidates excel in wheel throwing, demonstrating precision, consistency, and craftsmanship. While knowledge of hand building, slab making, and other ceramic techniques is valuable, it is not required. We are looking for individuals with a commitment to creativity and a drive for continuous improvement within a collaborative studio environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Throwing (Potter’s Wheel): Mastery in throwing a variety of forms with consistency, precision, and attention to detail.
- Trimming and Finishing: Refining thrown pieces to a high-quality standard, ensuring smoothness and consistency.
- Glazing: Applying commercial or studio-made glazes and executing surface decoration techniques effectively.
- Mould Making and Slip Casting: Executing mould-making techniques and slip casting processes to produce high-quality ceramic pieces. Proficiency in creating, maintaining, and utilising moulds is highly valued but not essential and can be trained on-site.
- Kiln Operation: Proficiency in loading, firing, and maintaining electric kilns, with further training available to the candidate.
- Prototyping and Product Development: Collaborating with the studio team to develop new designs and refine existing ones.
- Quality Control: Ensuring all pieces meet the brand’s standards of craftsmanship and aesthetics.
- Studio Maintenance: Keeping work areas clean, organised, and stocked with necessary materials.
Skills/Requirements
- Proven Experience: Demonstrable experience in working creatively with ceramics.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in clay preparation and wheel throwing, along with the use of various throwing and trimming tools, is essential.
- Creative Mindset: Willingness to explore new designs, materials, techniques and the passion for continuous improvement and skill development.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to produce and replicate pieces with precision and consistency.
- Team Player: Collaborative mindset and openness to feedback.
Desirable Skills (Not Required but Appreciated)
- Advanced Ceramic Techniques: Experience with hand building, glazing, mould making, slip casting, and other specialised ceramic processes is appreciated but not required.
- Glaze Chemistry, and Kiln Scheduling: Understanding the preparation and application of studio-made glazes, basic glaze chemistry, and the ability to plan and manage kiln firing schedules effectively
- Sculptural Forms and Large-Scale Works: Ability to create and work with sculptural pieces or large-scale ceramic works is appreciated but not required.
- Digital / Analogue Design Tools: Experience using digital or analogue tools for design, documentation, or prototyping is appreciated but not required.
