It’s that time of the year again when the holiday cheer fills the air, and the office transforms into a wonderland of fairy lights and festive playlists. Among the excitement, the much-anticipated Secret Santa tradition is in full swing. But, as with any event involving anonymous gift-giving, the road to holiday joy is often paved with surprises, laughter, and a few awkward moments.

This year, the Secret Santa gift exchange at Obiba Enterprise was no exception. It was meant to be a simple affair: pick a name, buy a thoughtful gift, and spread some cheer. What could possibly go wrong?

Turns out a lot!

On the final workday before Christmas, the office buzzed with excitement. Augustine from Operations, A.K.A.DJ Super, the office DJ, had everyone grooving to Ghanaian Christmas medleys.

A majestic Christmas tree dominated the room, with packages of all shapes and sizes stacked underneath. The atmosphere was electric as colleagues mingled over plates of jollof rice, fried chicken, goat light soup, kelewele and some finger foods among others.

After a lively session of carol, nine lessons, musical chairs, and a few spirited dance-offs, it was time for the much-anticipated Secret Santa unwrapping.

What could possibly go wrong?

The Unveiling of Surprises

The first recipient, Abrefi from sales, tore into her brightly wrapped gift box with excitement. Her enthusiasm quickly turned to confusion as she pulled out a cookbook titled “Sweet Adjeley’s Special Recipe for Beginners.” The room erupted in applause; Abrefi was known for her legendary culinary disasters. “Well,” she quipped, “maybe my Santa wants me to start a food joint. Thank you, Santa, for being thoughtful.!” And the room chorused with the favourite Ghanaian emotional happy phrase, aaaaaawwww………

Next was Enyonam, the marketing executive known for her love for social media. Her gift was wrapped with shiny paper and a red bow. She anxiously ripped it open to find  a selfie stick with the inscription, “Because you’re your best brand ambassador!” The room cheered as Enyonam burst out laughing, “This is definitely going on my next TikTok. Cheers, the content queen!”

The Plot Thickens

Then, it was Rita’s turn. Rita was the office’s welcoming face, as the receptionist and her Secret Santa had noticed. She received a gorgeous African print piece of cloth and a handwritten note that read: “Thank you for being the first smile we see every day.” Rita’s eyes lit up as she held her gift, and she gave an emotional “thank you” to her secret Santa.

The shocking moment came when Selina, the HR manager, unwrapped her present: a T-shirt with the bold words “Boss Lady” across the chest. Selina, known for her strict demeanour, cracked a smile and declared, “I’ll wear this to our next board meeting!”

The Perfect Finale

The most touching moment came when Abrefi, a junior staff member who had recently lost her father, unwrapped her gift to find a journal and a bouquet of fresh flowers. The note simply said: “For all the thoughts and dreams you’ll write here. We’re glad you’re part of our family.” Adwoa’s smile was radiant as she hugged the bouquet tightly. “This means so much to me,” she said softly.

The Spirit of Secret Santa

As the event wrapped up, the laughter, joy, and heartfelt moments left everyone feeling closer than ever. The thoughtful gifts reminded the team of how small gestures could have a big impact. And even the funny mismatches brought a sense of camaraderie that would carry into the new year.

Why Gifting Matters

In Ghanaian workplaces, gifting during the festive season isn’t just about the presents. It’s about showing appreciation, encouraging gratitude, fostering community, creating memories, and spreading joy and happiness. Thoughtful gifts tell our colleagues that we see and value them, while even the quirky ones remind us to laugh together.

So, as you prepare for your workplace festivities this season, remember: the thought, effort, and shared joy truly counts.
